Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease that most often affects middle age to elderly patients. It occurs when the cartilage that covers the articular surfaces of the joint bones progressively deteriorates, resulting in severe pain, stiffness, limited range of motion and functional limitations. Numerous factors, such as age, gender, obesity and previous trauma, may contribute to the development of OA. Osteoarthritis is a long-term condition. To alleviate its symptoms various treatment options can be implemented. For the pain relief caused by moderate symptoms conservatively treatment, such as physical therapy, medication and injections, can be chosen. More severe cases, when symptomatic treatment is not helpful, the orthopaedic surgeon may consider and suggest partial or total joint replacement. This procedure is called knee arthroplasty and it is considered as the gold standard for end-stage arthritis
